Barclays - Don't Bank On Apartheid

Saturday 23 September 12 noon - 2pm
Barclays Bank, Queens Road, TN34 1QP

On Saturday there will be more than 20 events throughout the UK demanding that Barclays severs its financial ties to companies supplying Israel with weapons and military technology used to assault and kill Palestinians. Barclays has more than £1 billion invested in companies supplying weapons and military technology to Israel. This includes investments in Israeli drone manufacturer Elbit which makes the militarised drones that are used to target and kill civilians in Gaza. In addition to its investments, Barclays provides £3.9 billion in loans and underwriting to these companies. More information at the PSC website: Barclays: Don't Bank on Apartheid.

Visit My Mosque Day

Hastings mosque has its 'Visit My Mosque Day' tomorrow Saturday 12.30 - 3.30. We've always found the people at the local mosque very welcoming; and we've always valued their support for Palestinian rights and justice. People might remember the day we commemorated Nakba75 at the mosque and worked with the children's madrasah.

The mosque is at 12 Mercatoria, Hastings TN38 0EB. The Facebook event page.

Dates for your diary

  • Right to Boycott Day of Action Saturday 7 October. 12.00 noon. Hastings town centre. More information to follow. PSC website.

  • 'Israel, Palestine and me:' Views from non-Zionist Jews. Saturday 7 October. 3.30pm. White Rock Hotel.
The Board of Deputies would like the country to believe that all British Jews hold Israel dear to their hearts, that it represents an integral part of their identity. This is far from the reality. The link between British Jewry and the State of Israel has never been more tenuous with increasing numbers declaring themselves non-Zionists or anti-Zionists. Here, three British Jews discuss their journeys towards Palestinian solidarity. More details to follow.

    Global Swim With Gaza 2023

Our Swim With Gaza was truly international with groups joining in from more than 40 locations - from New Zealand to Vancouver, Kuala Lumpa to Oaxaca in Mexico; and along the Sussex coastline - Hastings, Brighton, Eastbourne and Worthing. The main aim of the day was to show solidarity with the 2.2 million people of Gaza who have lived under Israeli siege for more than 16 years.

At the centre of the day's activities was the Swimming Festival in Gaza run by the Tantish Swimming Academy. The plan was to have 1,000 children swimming in the sea. The Festival is run by Amjed Tantish whose academy has taught thousands of children in Gaza to swim. This article gives the incredible story of Amjed's dogged persistence in building up the Academy for over 20 years - despite the Israeli blockade and its regular bombing and destruction.

As part of the global day of solidarity, a fund was set up to give free swimming lessons for disadvantaged children in Gaza. In Hastings we collected £123. The global fund has now reached £6,260. This will give lessons to more than 150 children.

Report of our Swim With Gaza event in Hastings: Article here. This is our video. The video from the organisers and the Swim With Gaza website. This is a short video from our friends in Al-Mawasi. And a video of a group of youngsters from nearby Khan Younis.

    Film show: Gaza

Following on from our Swim With Gaza, we showed the Film 'Gaza' shortly afterwards. It's a very powerful film: it left some in shock, some in tears. The film shows a community with an incredible, rich, diverse, culture. It presents a group of people who we get to know, get to like. And then it shows how Israel puts them through hell, with constant bombing, sniping at demonstrators, 16 years of siege.....

If you haven't seen the film, it can be rented online for £3.49, bought for £5.99 at Amazon.co.uk.

Thanks to distributor Real Films for letting us show the film. They have a partner charity in Gaza called Amjaad. At the film show we collected £80 for Amjaad. Their crowd funder is at Amjaad in Gaza.
