Film show: Fadia's Tree

Thursday June 22nd at 7.30pm
Kino-Teatr, 43-49 Norman Road, St Leonards TN38 0EG

Through telling Fadia's story the film vividly illustrates how the Nakba never stopped. Fadia's family was expelled from Palestine in 1948 and the family still lives in a Lebanese refugee camp. The film developed from a friendship between film maker Sarah Beddington and the family over 17 years. It is a extraordinary story on many levels.

Meeting with Professor David Miller

Thanks to everyone who came to last Saturday's meeting with Professor Miller. It was a highly informative and thought-provoking talk by someone whose research and body of work is truly impressive. It is because of his vast research into the Israel lobby that he has been attacked probably more than anyone by the lobby and its supporters. Despite this, he shows huge dignity, warmth and humour in the face of sustained attacks on his character.

Professor Miller gave a thorough and in-depth analysis of today's Zionist movement. In answering a question about the Palestine solidarity movement, he suggested that the movement could put more resources towards targetting the organisations that are directly sponsoring and supporting settlement activity in the West Bank. He also gave a fascinating insight into the changing nature of the geopolitical world.

We are preparing a full report of the meeting. In the meantime here is a summary of the meeting. In this video, Professor Miller explains the background to his sacking by Bristol University; he also lists some of the other targets of the Israel lobby such as Shahd Abusalama and Shaima Dallalai. Video here.

Protect the right to boycott

The government is proposing an 'anti-boycott bill' that, if passed, could dramatically affect our ability to campaign for social and climate justice in the UK and around the world.

The bill makes it illegal for local councils, universities, and other UK public bodies to make their own ethical decisions about who to do business with- such as deciding to boycott human-rights-abusing companies. Instead, public bodies will be forced to follow UK government foreign policy - specifically towards Israel and Palestine - and will not be able to refuse business with companies on the ethical grounds of complicity in Israel's apartheid and occupation regime.

This new legislation tries to rob social justice movements of a vital tool - the power to boycott - used to successfully generate pressure to end human rights abuses.
