Gaza Ghetto: Film and Q&A with Shahd Abusalama

Saturday 11 June 3pm.
White Rock Hotel, Hastings TN34 1JU

An invitation to experience the 'world's largest open prison' from the inside at our film screening and talk

This ground-breaking documentary about the life of a Palestinian family in the Jabalia refugee camp was the first to be filmed within Gaza. Our speaker Shahd was born in the Jabalia camp. She was born at the barrel of a gun during the First Intifada as her mother went into labour during a military curfew and she was stopped by armed soldiers on her way to hospital. She was raised in the Second Intifada and survived three deadly military assaults in Gaza before moving to the UK to study.

Shahd has became an important anti-racist campaigner in the UK, an advocate for Palestinian liberation, as well as a founding member of the Hawiyya Dance Company, bringing Palestinian cultural and folkloric traditions to all parts of the UK - including to Hastings last September for our Palestine on the Pier.

Earlier this year Shahd came under attack from the Israel lobby in the UK which attempted to smear and defame her, threatening her academic career. Following a tremendous campaign of support these attempts to silence her failed and Shahd has recently completed her PhD at Sheffield Hallam University investigating historical representations of Palestinian refugees in documentary cinema.

Join us for this powerful and important meeting. Refreshments served afterwards.

Hastings Nakba 74 Rally and Memorial for Shireen Abu Akleh

Thanks to everyone who came to our rally and memorial event, especially as it was called at such short notice.

It is 74 years since the Nakba - or catastrophe - when the majority of the Palestinian population fled the terror of the Zionist forces which ethnically cleansed over 500 villages and cities.

Shireen Abu Akleh was shot dead wearing her Press vest, while covering an Israeli military assault on the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank. She is the 55th journalist to be murdered by the Israeli military since 2000.

We also commemorated the life of 16 year old Thaer Khalil Mohammad Maslat. He is the tenth Palestinian child shot and killed by Israeli forces this year. A short video of our rally.

Israeli military attack Shireen's funeral
People throughout the world were appalled at the assault on the pallbearers of Shireen's coffin. Lareen Abu Akleh, a relative of Shireen, describes how the offense took place. This video includes footage of the attack. Lareen Abu Akleh.

The Israeli military announced yesterday that it will not conduct a criminal probe into Shireen's death "on grounds that there is no suspicion of a criminal act." Source, Haaretz.
