Protest Against Instro in Sandwich

Friday 23 September 1pm Guildhall Square, Sandwich
Instro Precision is a subsidiary of Elbit Systems, which supplies most of Israel's militarised drones which are used to target civilians, schools, medical facilities, media and essential services. Instro designs and manufactures optical components that enable drones, planes, tanks and guns to fix on their targets. Elbit advertises its kit as 'battle-tested' on Palestinians.

Our branch is supporting this action and a number of our members and contacts will be travelling to Sandwich. We have a few members looking for lifts; if you are planning to drive to Sandwich and can give a lift, please get in touch. Facebook event page.

Palestine On The Pier 2022

Thanks to all those who took part and to everyone who came to make it a truly unforgettable, special afternoon celebrating Palestinian culture - fashion, music, dance, crafts and food.

We were really pleased at the turnout - the pier managers estimated that there were more than 3,000 visitors during the day.

Thanks to Luke at South East Photography for this short video (which includes some of the Meridian TV footage): Video here.

And here's a video of the festival that includes the run up to the event, the banner making, the heritage dress display at the White Rock Hotel, Miranda Allan's tatreez workshops and Areej Kaoud's art installations at the Big Yin: Video here.

40 years since the Sabra and Shatila massacre

Last week marked 40 years since the Sabra and Shatila massacre where Israeli forces surrounded the two Palestinian refugee camps, preventing anyone from escaping before allowing Lebanon's Phalangist militias to enter and murder up to 3,000 (mainly) Palestinian refugees. Over a two-day period, Israeli forces fired flares lighting the alleys of the camp allowing the massacre to continue overnight.

'Refusing is the minimum:' Why these Israeli teens are objecting to army service

Interview with refuseniks Evyatar Moshe Rubin, Einat Gerlitz, Nave Shabtay Levin, and Shahar Schwartz. Evyatar: 'I decided to refuse because the main goal of the army is the ethnic cleansing of non-Jews, as they do in Masafer Yatta. This is something I cannot abide by - neither ideologically nor morally. That's why I choose not to serve.' 'Refusing is the minimum'

Israel sentences Gaza aid worker Mohammed El Halabi to 12 years after sham trial

Israel sentenced aid worker Mohammed El Halabi from Gaza to 12 years in prison over charges of funneling international aid to Hamas after a sham trial lasting six years. The judges convicted El Halabi on the basis of secret evidence, and ruled as irrelevant both testimony from his charity World Vision and a comprehensive audit by the firm Deloitte. That audit reviewed every payment made by World Vision over five years and "found no sign of missing funds and no evidence El Halabi was working for Hamas."

Netflix's comedy drama Mo: 'groundbreaking TV'

The new comedy drama starring Mohammed Amer as a Palestinian refugee has been broadcast on Netflix. It not only shows Palestinians as real people (!) but it's funny as well. 'Greater visibility for the Palestinian identity globally will make it harder to erase the truth of the struggle for justice against Israel.' As we're so used to the mainstream media showing the Arab population generally and Palestinians specifically in a negative light, this can certainly be described as 'groundbreaking.'

And there's even a mention of Palestinian farmers having their olive trees burned by Israeli settlers! From a time not long ago when the BBC bleeped out the word 'Palestine' from a music programme, it looks like we're making progress. Mo is the inspiration Palestinian cinema needs.
