Our 'Nativity Reimagined' street theatre in Hastings and Rye

December 2019. Our 'Nativity Reimagined' street theatre came to Hastings and Rye. The giant scene of Mary & Joseph approaching Bethlehem, only to be met with the 8 metre high wall that currently surrounds the city, drew interested onlookers and provoked lots of thoughtful conversations.

We also gave out dozens of copies of our new factsheet about the illegal 'Separation Wall' which runs down the length of the West Bank, separating Palestinians from their lands, natural resources, communities, places of work, worship, healthcare and education.

  • The Wall, built by Israel, is illegal under international law.
  • Today it is 460 kms long and 8 metres high - twice the height of the Berlin Wall - marked by watchtowers, electric fences, trenches, cameras & military patrols.
  • It cuts off 150 Palestinian communities from their land. To access their land, Palestinians need permits - 40% are denied.
  • Thousands must cross 11 checkpoints every day to work.
  • Queues start at 3am at the checkpoints - which are overcrowded, humiliating and lack sanitation. Some have been crushed to death at checkpoints.
  • The Wall has been used as an excuse for large scale demolitions of Palestinian homes, shops & schools.
  • The Wall & its checkpoints imposes a huge price tag on the Palestinian economy - 30% live below the poverty line.
